Not only did Ola Al-Qaradawi and Hosam Khalaf graduate from University of Texas, but Hosam’s father was also an alumni and visiting professor for many years. The Daily Texan published a story of how Egypt is holding university alumni in solitary confinement for over 100 days. The article was published immediately after Hosam’s detainment was extended without due process for another 15 days last Wednesday.
“These are informal allegations lodged by the state-run media with no substance or evidence to back it up,” said Ola’s international human rights lawyer, Jared Genser, to the Daily Texan. “What is crystal clear is that Egypt is not following its own laws or international laws in how they are treating Ola and Hosam in their cases.”
The article also discussed how UT Amnesty International student organization began writing letters last month to the Egyptian government and informing the UT administration of the human rights violations.
In his latest renewal Hosam was very concerned about his wife Ola after Egyptian authorities separated their renewal dates to deny them from the two minutes they would see each other.
As part of a campaign kicked off last week, supporters have been posting #FreeOlaandHosam messages online in solidarity with 100 days of solitary confinement and human rights violations. The support has been overwhelming and we thank everyone for speaking up for their freedom.
